Float Bed

Here is a simple but very elegant design of a float bed.
Would like to buy one but at 3960 Euros, it is just way way too costly.

MyTinyHands.com

Check this one:A Random Walk Down Tech Street: MyTinyHands.com up and running
Basically this dude who is currently pursuing MBA from Sloan, had a premature kid, and he and his wife realised that a do-not-touch-befor-washing-hands sign they had put on their babies carrier is not only effective, but also inviting trade inquiries.
Lo and behold, they now have a business up and running selling these signs.
Love their creativity!

Tax Reform

State of California is implementing a new system where the residents will get pre-filled tax returns. They just need to sign it and return it.
I guess India should replace the Saral form with something similar. This will benefit a large section of Indian taxpayers as most of the 25 Mn taxpayers are in service jobs. In their case it is the employers obligation to scrutinise various documents. Hence even with plethora of deductions available to an Indian Tax Payer, there are no road blocks. With TIN coming in place, already companies are filling their tax challans online. Not only that, but tax payers can also file their return online starting this year. This will be a logical extension to the existing system, and I bet is going to be a huge success.
Actually a better system will be to extend the Online Return Filing to Ordinary Tax Payers and to do away completely with the intermediary involved right now.
Believe me or not, an average Indian is intimidated by the complex thing called Personal Income Tax. More than that they are intimidated by the officials of IT Deptt. Filing a return in the queue and computation of taxes is a big drain on time and I am sure causes a lot of hardships. Computerisation offers salvation to the poor service being offered to the denizens of this country.
DO IT. DO IT. DO IT.

NASDAQ? What exactly is NASDAQ?

Ok, this did hit me like a ton. NASDAQ stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automatic Quotation System.
Explains what is NASDAQ, NASD, OTC stocks and likes....

Why EPF, PPF are Ponzi schemes!

Why EPF, PPF are Ponzi schemes!
I think the Governement has averted the crisis by moving away from the Defined Benefits pension schemes to Defined Contributions scheme, effective (I think) 1st Jan 2004 for all Central Governement Employees. Nevertheless it would be interesting to do a trend analysis based on Demographic data (there has to be a corelation between Pouplation growth rate and the no. of PPF contributor growth rate), GDP growth rate to arrive at a time frame when EPF, PPF will go bust or may be they wont go bust, but then this has to be analysed.
This can also give important trend lines on liabilities of Central Govt Institutions.

This news made my day...

> One of the best kept secret of Campus 2003 is out...and its official.
> But going by the tradition of cluenatics and inspired by Da Vinci code, you will have to decipher the news by these clues:
> 1. Two of the (original) campus2003 are getting married to each other.
> 2. He carries a fire breathing animal on his shoulder.
>
> Congratulations and God bless the young couple.

Musings on a sunny morning

We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we've both fallen under
(- We Belong by Pat Benetar http://www.ckdhr.com/hrose/songs/we_belong.html)

What is it that makes a man give up everything to follow a thought? Its the word of his leader.
Leadership is not just about vision, it is also about the ability to articulate the vision into simple words. A person who has more command on the language is always a winner in an argument or a negotiation. Even if he is not a winner, then at least he will dominate.
It truly is a gift of God to weave magic into words. Its an art. Sandra Lewis Pringle is one such artist. She writes poems, prayers, notes of encouragement for the needy. and she is great in it.
Read (http://grtgsfmtheheartandsoul.net/) her writings and you suddenly start feeling religious from within.

I am really jealous of such people. Its a wepon which I want in my arsenal, but need a guide who can help in in find this art for me.

Tsunami - The word I never heard of two weeks ago...

Its probably the goriest of all images I have ever seen in my life.
Just a reminder that humans are just another species on this planet.

Poetry In Small Pieces

I know what you are thinking. This blog has been reduced to just refrences to things I read and want to keep for future. Well cant help it, unless until I get a better device than my computer to post online. Came across this excellent poet : Monica Mody's blog titled In Small Pieces
Her poems are soft and sensous like old Hindi film song.
I have always been enthralled by creative people, partly because this is something I have always desired to have and I dont know why. May be because I have always seen my parents who have been my role model throughout as Operational people, and they have been brilliant at that frankly speaking.
May be it has something to do with my disillusion with money and the ways people adopt to make it. Most of the time they dont create but resell. Someday I would write more on this.
As for now, I just loved Miss Monica's I want you
May she brings recognition to the country and the family with her poems.

US Patent Woes

So much for free society. I have always thought of US as stupidly litiguos. And here is something which supports me.
Read IEEE Spectrum's analysis of the malaise of the current Patent regime in US.
I think patents are hurdles in the progress of mankind. They are impediments in the pursuit of happiness. If we calculate the total energy spent on all the patents and on fighting legal battles on the same, its really not worth it.
Look at it...I remeber reading that US PTO grants some 30 odd patents on toilet design every year...God damn it, none of them have solved the problem of the water required to flush a toilet. If sulabh was patented, would it have been a revolution it has been today?

You are wrong Mr. Behrendt...

Not sure how many of you guys are a fans of Sex and the City...here is a book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo advising women on dating and stuff...On asked why he choose to call it 'He's Just Not That Into You' and not 'She's Just Not That Into You', he says ""Sure, we could have written that book," he says. "And about eight guys would have bought it." (http://edition.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/books/11/29/books.hes.not.into.you.ap/index.html)

Going by what I have seen (and unfortunately experienced) I am sure the book would have sold millions...

PS: What do you think about this? Lets write a book?

J2SE Code Names

"Since 1.2.2, major releases 1.3, 1.4.0, 5.0 and 6.0) are named after birds or mammals, while minor releases are named after insects, given that they are bug-fix releases. (Hopper is short for grasshopper, ladybird is another term for ladybug, and dragon is short for dragonfly.) "
http://java.sun.com/j2se/codenames.html

I wonder if the nomenclature of bugs has anything to do with the size of the bug...
:)
Reminded me of our own nomenclature antics.
